Sustainable Wedding Events

Practical, beautiful ways to plan a more sustainable, eco-friendly wedding in Santorini — from invitations and florals to dining and jewellery.

Couples are more conscious than ever of the waste a wedding can generate, and increasingly they're looking for ways to lower its footprint. There are so many options for a kinder, more ethical celebration — and sustainable weddings (or eco-friendly weddings, as they're also known) are a trend that's here to stay.

Here are some of the simplest, loveliest ways to make yours a little greener.

Invitations and favours

Start at the very beginning, with your invitations — choose recycled paper, or go web-based to cut paper use almost entirely. Ask guests to RSVP through your wedding website rather than posting back a separate card. And instead of the traditional favour, consider a charitable donation on your guests' behalf; it's an increasingly popular and meaningful alternative.

Flowers and décor

Ask your florist about potted plants rather than cut flowers with a short life span — guests can take them home afterwards. Reposition arrangements from the ceremony to the reception so they work twice as hard, and choose fresh flowers over plastic-based decorations wherever you can.

Dining and drinks

Opt for glassware over plastic. Caterers and bartenders can offer reusable stirrers and straws instead of single-use plastic, and it's worth confirming that your caterer sources ethical, local and organic produce.

Jewellery

Consider conflict-free stones and recycled metals for your rings. Wedding jewellery has historically carried a heavy environmental cost, and choosing thoughtfully is a quiet way to make a real difference.

None of this has to mean compromise. A little creativity goes a long way — and the greenest choices are often the ones that keep you comfortably within budget, too.
